When we are looking for something more from a holiday because we have grown weary of beach holidays and sight seeing tours there is a different form of holidaying awaiting us in the form of voluntary working holidays. Here in Finland there is the opportunity to do some voluntary work at Toivo Farm, an organic farm specialising in biodynamic produce (see link below for more information about biodynamic farming). Accommodation and food are given in exchange for your time, which could be spent in the fields or in the kitchen if you prefer.
This opportunity offers plenty of learning opportunities, lots of fresh air, real experiences of living within another culture, meeting other people from around the world as well as experiencing a whole new way of life.
I’ve heard that quite a few former volunteers have gone back to their own country and started their own farms because they have been so inspired!
It’s easy to become disconnected from the natural world particularly if we live in a city with a routine 9-5 job. At my own Holistic Retreat in Finland my guests get a strengthened feeling of connection to their roots and their source of divine power and inspiration just by spending time in a place where they collect their own spring water from the well, use a bio-earth toilet, compost and recycle their waste and have wash facilities in the wood burning lakeside sauna using lake water for washing and chopping their own wood.
Imagine the even greater connection back to our source power after spending some time cultivating the earth, planting seeds and actually being a living part of the growth and creation process!
Rather than seeking help with our issues via therapy or healing we can take a different route and instead reconnect to our true power. When we really connect back to the Earth and experience the simple majesty of life all of our so called issues often fall away into insignificance.
As a healer and a gardener I highly recommend it!
There are also opportunities at Toivo for handcraft courses, meditation groups and reiki courses and circles. Toivo is the Finnish word for hope and/or wishes, it signifies how the place is open for you to come and discover yourself there either through the connection to Earth via the farm
work, or through reawakening your creativity with handicraft techniques or through spiritual and energy work in the healing centre.
Sara Gardner is an experienced healer who lives and works at Mairela Holistic Retreat in Finland where she has created a large organic hobby garden.
