NLP and Hypnotherapy in Times of Angst
By Matthew Ferguson
We are living through economic and politically challenging times. In fact one way or another we seem to always be in economically and politically challenging times. The constant news flow of wars, financial and political instability are enough to make even the most sanguine person edgy. Even when things are going well for us individually it is easy to fall into the trap of looking out for and waiting for the next disaster. Or is just me? I suspect not!
It can be hard sometimes to get perspective. There is in fact, on a global basis, major improvements in all areas of life from war to health. Why is it so easy to forget this and focus on fear and insecurity? It is natural enough to look for things that may be a danger to us, that is part of our evolution but humans with their complex brain function and imaginations can produce fear and anxiety even where there is no danger. Think of phobias, people can terrify themselves over things that represent no threat or danger.
The good news is that we can get perspective and change brain processes to live lives with more freedom, joy, pleasure and love by among other things learning and using the skills in NLP and the altered states of mind and subsequent perceptions generated by Hypnosis as used in therapy. In fact the recent discoveries in nuero-science show us that our brains have great capacity to re-wire or in other words our brains have platicity.
Hypnotherapy used effectively and responsibly can generate states of mind where positive suggestion and perspectives can take hold and rewire the brain and create positive attitudes that generate new behaviours and responses. In a hypnotic state we can create new associations that move us away from fears and anxieties towards emotional freedom and personal empowerment.
With the easily learnable skills and strategies in NLP we can develop an empowered mind set that makes us both curious and courageous to change what we can and not fret too much over what we cannot.
Learning how to use the practical simple skills of NLP and Hypnosis can enhance our well being at both the psychological and physical levels. We certainly need the necessities of life, food, shelter, safety, and belonging but in addition we need to know in a practical way how we can better manage our emotional and general mental states and understanding how to use NLP and Hypnosis helps us do just that.
