Course duration: Practical elements are covered over 2 days attendance at our centre 9.30am – 5.30pm. Theory elements are covered by homestudy, typically over 3 to 12 months plus 3 final assessments to be carried out at our centre.
Course description: The VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Stone Therapy Massage (QCF) is a specialist vocationally related qualification. This qualification will enable learners at a minimum to gain skills, knowledge and understanding required in order to perform massage treatments using hot and cold basalt stones for clients. Learners will gain skills and knowledge and the understanding needed to perform professional stone therapy massage treatments for clients via employment or self employment in the beauty therapy or complementary therapy industry. This qualification is most suited to learners who wish to advance in their profession.
Stone Therapy is a useful progression for existing Massage therapists, those offering stress relief treatments and working in fields where the application of hot or cold stimulus to the muscles is beneficial. This technique uses specific types of stones at different temperatures (generally basalt stones are used with hot temperatures and marble for cold stone work) in contact with the skin in order to increase the effects of massage with the aim of improving relaxation and creating balance within the body therefore improving the client’s sense of well-being.
What will I learn? The Level 3 Certificate in Stone Therapy Massage (QCF) is a course that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; how to provide the relaxing and stress relieving treatment of massage using hot and cold stones. Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of Health and Safety, client care and communication. You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification, such as anatomy and physiology. The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills in providing stone therapy massage treatments to a high level of occupational ability, to enable you to provide your own services for clients.
National Occupational Standards (NOS): Units in this qualification have been mapped to the relevant NOS (where applicable). This qualification is accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). This qualification is approved and supported by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA), the standard setting body for hair, beauty, nails and spa qualifications.

R/600/8780 – Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
T/601/4457 – Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
H/601/4454 – Apply stone therapy massage
What are the course requirements? It is recommended that you have a level of general education comparable to GCSEs. You should have a caring disposition and be committed to fulfilling the in-class and guided home study components of the course. To enroll on this course you must attend an enrollment interview either in person meeting the course tutor, or via telephone/Skype. You must meet the required Guided learning Hours (GLH) by attending our centre and by attending classes in our Virtual Learning Environment, online meetings and reviews with your tutor and assessor via Moodle.
Case studies – you must carry out and document evidence for at least sixteen treatments on a minimum of four clients. Each case study must include a client questionnaire, lifestyle assessment, consent form, consultation record, treatment record, after care advice and client feedback.
How will I be assessed? This qualification requires the student to provide evidence of competence in the form of case studies or individual treatments to cover range statements, demonstrate sufficient knowledge to be able to explain Stone Therapy Massage and provide it safely, effectively and consistently.
Independent study is an essential part of this course and you will be required to complete both practical and theoretical assignments at home. Assessments will take place during the course and again when all your case studies and Portfolio of Evidence is completed.

Career progression: The VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Stone Therapy Massage (QCF) provides learners with the necessary understanding and skills to provide stone therapy massage treatments for clients. Candidates can progress into other areas of the beauty therapy industry or complementary therapy industry and / or directly into employment or self employment with this qualification. Progression opportunities exist in the form of further studies at level 3.
