Sagila Wines - Black Economic Empowerment wine
You won't have heard of Sagila wines, because they are new and this is the first time they have been imported into the UK!
The wines are the brainchild of Mzokhona Mvemve, a talented winemaker who has a winemaking degree from Stellenbosch University and now also an MBA. Having been the winemaker for Cape Classics, he has now branched out on his own and is buying grapes to make wine under his own label, Sagila, named in memory of his grandfather. (Sagila was the traditional mace which his grandfather carried in Zulu ceremonies.)
This is a Black Economic Empowerment wine, but when you talk to Mzo you get the impression that he'd rather not shout about this. He wants people to buy his wines because they are good quality and value and he wants them to be successful in their own right. We think the wines have lovely ripe, zesty fruit and are extremely well-made as well as very moderately priced.
