Are the British Nutrition Foundation Missing the Point(s)?
25/03/2010
The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) a UK charity, have released a new review of of the benefits of health supplements with regard to warding off / treating colds and flu.
Overall, the review, carried out by Dr Elisabeth Weichselbaum from the BNF leans towards the view that supplements offer little benefits unless its for the elderly, pregnant women, and young children (so beneficial for many important sub groups then!)
But this is little surprise given that their official view is...
“Eating a healthy and varied diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables is the best way to ensure that daily vitamin and mineral requirements are met. A healthy diet will not prevent a common cold infection, but a sufficient nutrient supply will support the immune system and thus provides the best basis to lower the risk and duration of common cold infections.”
Firstly, we remain somewhat baffled as to how a nutrition charity with a 40 year history is ignoring the evidence in respect of demineralised soils and the impact this is having on the health of the nation. More on this below.
Secondly, these reviews are, as ever, ALL looking at synthetic supplements. We look forward to the day when such reviews consider the differences between natural, and laboratory produced health supplements, because there can be no doubt, there is a difference!
Researchers quote “high doses should be taken with caution as high intakes of some nutrients can interfere with the absorption of others”. The reason for this poor absorption is undoubtedly the inherent nature of a chemical supplement which the human body does not know how to digest properly.
It seems we havent been the only ones pondering the British Nutrition Foundation this week, this article in the Independant indicates they are funded by the British Food Industry.
A Closer Look at Demineralisation
Due to decades of intensive farming methods, the use of chemical pesticides, agricultural 'over working' of the land and over grazing of livestock, our soils and the crops grown, the levels of vitamins, minerals and trace elements in our soil are falling all the time
Whereas once we ate nutritious, whole foods packed with nutrition, now, even if we eat organic and stick to the recommended 5 a day; we are simply not receiving the same level of nutrients as in previous decades.
The last comprehensive study was completed in 1991 looking at data right through from 1940 as per the illustration on the right.
Of the 28 raw, and 44 cooked vegetables studied in 1940, 27 were able to be traced accurately through to the 90s in terms of being the same variety
It is now estimated that the levels of vitamins and minerals in our foods has decreased by a massive 75% in the past 25 years.
In other words, you would have to eat four carrots today to acquire the same level of nutrition as you did 25 years ago!
