Following a £86,000refurbishment, The Barn Retreat, a meditation retreat centre in a stunning hillside location on The Sharpham Estate overlooking the River Dart in South Devon, is set to welcome even more guests.
Bookings at the 25-year-old centre were boosted last year when it was independently listed by The Sunday Telegraph as one of the best eight retreats in Britain and Europe.
“A place in the listing has been great news for us but unfortunately the interest generated has meant that we’ve had to turn many people away because we had limited accommodation,” said Retreat Manager, Peter Mallard, “The refurbishmenthas eased this situation as we’ve been able to add extra bedrooms, new shower rooms, a library and a reading room.
The refit, which took three weeks to complete, included installing a combined new wood fuel and solar thermal heating system that has significantly reduced the amount of fuel needed to keep everyone warm in winter. “The new system has overcome the quirky inconsistency of the previous furnace which meant people had to bring both jumpers and tee-shirts to every retreat!”
“Our successful Barn retreat structure allows people find a way to slow down and gain a deep appreciation of the more wholesome aspects of their lives,” said Peter. “Now, with the greater range of facilities and resources, we are able to offer more places to more people and meet a wider range of individual retreat needs and preferences.”
The Barn Retreat is part of the Sharpham Trust, an educational charity based on the Sharpham Estate, near Totnes, Devon in South West England. For more details about the Barn Retreat and its retreats and the Sharpham Estate, see the Trust’s website
