Eat chocolate to lower your BMI?
In the news this week it has been said that those who eat chocolate on more days of the week than average were statistically likely to have a lower BMI.
Gemma Hurditch, Nutritional Therapist and CNM's Director of Nutrition, gives her thoughts on BMI (Body Mass Index).
"In my opinion the BMI calculator is a limited tool, I don’t like how it focus’s on weight rather than what is making up the weight – as we know muscle weighs more than fat.
"If someone is confused or unsure as to whether or not they are in a healthy weight range I think a fat percentage calculation is going to give much more relevant information, and same goes for weight loss programmes – for example some people put on weight when they start exercising, which wouldn’t correspond with them becoming less healthy."
Studying at CNM
CNM student turns her passion into a new career. Julie Dodd graduated from CNM Birmingham in 2010 and is now a successful Nutritional Therapist with her own business.
“For 30 years I worked hard as a senior manager in a big energy firm but some years ago I started to grow tired of the faceless corporate world and decided to look for a new challenge. Food, cooking and health have always been a passion for me so I started to look at courses over a period of two years. On hearing about CNM, I arranged a chat with the Director of Studies and then attended a lecture – that was the moment I knew this was the course for me.
“My time at CNM was fascinating, the calibre of teaching was outstanding and after starting off doing the course for my own personal interest, I soon realised that I could make a living doing something I’m passionate about. In my final year of studies I was made redundant, which turned out to be a blessing as I could focus on my studies and concentrate on starting up my business. I’m thrilled to be a practicing Nutritional Therapist and love CNM so much I’m now an assistant clinic supervisor!
