Brighton Permaculture Trust promotes greener lifestyles and sustainable development through design. We run courses and events and apply permaculture principles to our projects.
Brighton Permaculture Trust was formed in 2000 as an ethical not-for-profit organisation operating in Brighton and Sussex. It is a member of the national Permaculture Association (Britain). Brighton Permaculture Trust is run by an experienced team of volunteers and permaculturists, supported by a management group and trustees, and resourced through course/event fees, grants and donations.
Permaculture
The word ‘permaculture’ is derived from the two phrases ‘permanent agriculture’ and ‘permanent culture’. It is more than an approach to growing food – it is a system of design for improving all aspects of our lives.
Permaculture is based on the philosophy of co‑operating with nature and caring for the earth and its peoples. It draws on traditional wisdom and science, but also brings out our individual skills and our innate ability to learn from the world around us.
By observing local ecologies and applying creative principles, Permaculture design can provide practical strategies for
• living, learning and working
• using land, water, energy and other resources
• building and farming
• developing communities.
Whatever your interests, using permaculture empowers you to make a positive contribution towards a sustainable future.
18 small school & community orchards planted this winter
This winter we've helped schools and communities plant eighteen small orchards across Sussex. With our partners Action in rural Sussex, and as part of our ongoing programme of small orchard planting, we have worked with hundreds of schoolchildren in twelve schools and community members of mixed ages in six other locations to create orchards.
At most schools, we carried out an initial 'orchard workshop,' where we tasted different varieties, discussed what happens to the apple trees in each season, and drank local apple juice. On the planting day, we led the planting with lots of participation and lots of discussion about the hows and whys as we went along. Those who weren't planting were often taking part in apple cookery workshops with Community Chef Robin van Creveld, and in some places cooks and planters got together at the end to warm up with some freshly made apple and squash soup.
Manor Primary School in Uckfied decided to plant an orchard to celebrate the Jubilee. The whole school went 'off timetable' for the day and did everything from apple maths to apple poetry and apple art. BBC Southeast Today came to film on what turned out to be a very wet but successful day.
