Training & Equipment at Total Horsemanship
We will soon be holding stock of Tom Dorrance's new book 'More Than A Horseman' written by Margaret Dorrance and John Saint Ryan. If you are interested in ordering a copy, please email
me at sales@totalhorsemanship.co.uk
The book is a collection of essays and stories which not only reflect the admiration and respect for Tom Dorrance, but also give clues and direction to the many people who really want to develop their horsemanship skills. You will find knowledgeable horse people from many disciplines and a wide range of experience sharing their 'aha' moments. Talking about how, despite many a struggle, with Tom's guidance and with their own practice and determination, they could make incredible breakthroughs in understanding and communication with the horse.
I will have the equipment stand with me at all of Dave Stuart's courses and demonstrations again this year.
An interesting extract from Ray Hunt's book 'Think Harmony with Horses'
I'm just re-reading Ray's book and this is a part that I'd highlighted the first time I read it 7 years ago, and it still means as much today as it did back then.
"We'll ride this horse a few times and we'll kind of get him to turn around today, and tomorrow he's got to turn around better, and better the next day - and he's got to do it. The first thing you know he won't do it. I've heard a lot of people say, 'My horse was working pretty good yesterday. One time I had him turning around pretty good but now he won't.' Well, what they have done is that they have over-done. The horse was trying to figure them out, but when the rider wanted more and better without even rewarding the horse for what he'd tried to do, the horse said, 'This is the wrong thing to do because i get punished for this.' So he quits. He bucks them off, or blows up, or freezes up, or rears. Then the rider says, 'Oh gee,' and he quits doing what he was doing. The horse is the smart one - he learned how to save his life anyway, whether the rider has learned anything from it or not.
David Stuart Foundation Horsemanship - Young Horse Starting, Horsemanship Courses, Foundation Horsemanship Training Weeks, Demonstrations
Dave is back in the UK this weekend! I don't know where the last 6 months have gone! I've been trying out the sun-dance but think I've confused it with the rain-dance! Well, I guess the crops are growing and the ducks are happy - enough said! Very much looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible again this year and catching up with what you've been up to over the long winter months.
We start off in Lancashire with various private days and then the first intake of young horses arrive a week on Sunday for starting. We also have a full quota of students coming to train with Dave during that period, a busy month all round.

Demonstrations
We have quite a few demonstrations planned for this year around the country so we hope to see you at one close to you.
In the past the demonstrations have taken the format of a young horse start, preparing and getting the horse ready for their first ride. This year Dave will demonstrate the next step..... so what happens after you have had your horse started? In many ways it is a continuation of exposing the horse to different environments and developing a horses self confidence in different situations, consolidating and building on what has already occurred through the starting process. The horse learns that there is always an answer (comfort) for every question or challenge asked of it. The foundation stages of a horses training prepare a horse with basic manoevres that become a basis for more advanced movements at a later stage. Learning how to do things slow and right as opposed to fast and wrong, so that later it will become fast and right. Allowing them time to think down to their feet, waiting for them to find the answer, recognising a try and rewarding it.
For the human it's understanding the importance of laying a good foundation in preparation for success for both horse and rider, whatever your discipline. A fantastic opportunity not to be missed!

Foundation Horsemanship Training Weeks
This is a great chance to further your horsemanship in so many ways. The fundamental objectives of the week are for students to have the chance to watch the starting and the development of the young horses that Dave has in for a 28 day period.
The picture is of me riding my home bred youngster, StarMan. It was taken last July when he was 2yrs 3 months, it was his 9th ride. The picture opposite was his 13th ride and he had a total of 14 rides last year and then turned away. I have put 8 rides on him over the last couple of weeks and aim to do a total of 30 rides this year.
