My Journey to Becoming a Parelli Instructor
'My Parelli Journey' by Nell Cruse.
Nell is a 1* Junior Licenced Parelli Instructor based in South Devon. She has been studying the Parelli Natural Horsemanship programme since 2008 and has progressed to Instructor level.
My journey to Parelli started after 20 years of traditional competition at a local and regional level. A horse came into my life who didn't respond to any of the regular training techniques and I just couldn't understand why. I thought he was being naughty and stubborn and when I saw the Parelli programme, I thought it would be a good way of solving his problems.
What I didn't bargain for was that it would start me on the path of realisation that it was my problems and lack of understanding that was making him behave the way he did. Slowly but surely, I began to change my behaviour towards him, to understand his point of view and speak to him in a language that he understood because Parelli uses the natural communication method that horses use among themselves.
I never dreamed that one day I would be able to take this horse to the beach and we would have fun. However, I've come to realise that anything is possible if your horse is willing to be your partner.
Training as a 2* Parelli Professional
So the last few weeks have been a rollercoaster for me. I've been up at Parelli UK HQ at Stoneleigh Park taking my 2* Instructor course, which will eventually allow me to teach riding too. People may wonder why I can't do this straight away and the reason is that it is good for us to have a period of time learning at a certain level, even as a teacher.
The thing I love about Parelli students and instructors, which is evident even more so now for me personally than ever, is the desire to continually improve - Never Ending Self Improvement. That means that every Licenced Parelli Instructor has gone through strict testing and has to continually make sure they adhere to teaching Pat Parelli's programme. The last two weeks have been two of the toughest I've been through and that is why I am prouder than ever to be able to wear Pat's logo and represent him.
What is a Parelli Instructor?
Parelli Instructors are people who have been accredited by Parelli Natuaral Horsemanship to teach the Parelli programme. Instructors have to commit to never ending self improvement, to ensure that as our pupils continue to learn, so do we. This means that as an instructor, I do not mark time with my own horsemanship but continue to progress and learn. Behind all Parelli Instructors is a support network that goes all the way to Pat and Linda Parelli.
