The vast majority of horse feeds contain an array of synthetic chemicals, preservatives and additives, the effects of these are not truly understood  Soya, Soya oil and Maize within horse feed are of particular concern.    Many horse feeds also come from genetically modified crops; GM foods are justifiably causing great concern.

Due to a relative lack of organic ingredients available for horses, the suppliers or organic horse feed are currently fairly limited.   Most organic ingredients tend to be relatively high in energy and protein, yet low in fibre, so the availability of high fibre feeds is currently quite limited, but it is a growing marketplace and feed manufacturers are recognising the importance of developing organic feeds more and more.
